USPS employee arrested in $4M Spring Branch ISD tax payment theft investigation

Posted

Overnight, law enforcement arrested a USPS letter carrier in the employee parking lot of the post office on Town & Country Way with several stolen checks that had been mailed to Spring Branch ISD, according to court records reviewed by KPRC 2 News.

Eurey Dewayne Smith, 33, is still being processed into the Harris County Jail as of this writing. He’s expected to face charges of mail theft.

His arrest comes amid an extensive investigation into 220 victims reporting stolen tax payment checks mailed to Spring Branch ISD worth more than $4 million, according to law enforcement.

When Smith finished working Tuesday evening, investigators executed a search warrant on his Range Rover SUV, according to records, and found 12 first-class letters, 11 of which had been addressed to the Spring Branch ISD Tax Assessor Collector.

Smith works at the same post office where the school district has a PO box, according to records. Five of the letters had allegedly been opened and contained a check for the district.

The checks began disappearing from the mail in January before being altered and fraudulently deposited. The United States Postal Service Office of Inspector General led the investigation.

Smith is expected to face additional charges, according to law enforcement.

KPRC 2 News has reached out to USPS about Smith’s current employment status. We’ve also contacted Spring Branch ISD about the tax payments.
