A man was shot and killed inside a smoke shop in Chicago's Portage Park neighborhood on Thursday night.

Chicago police responded to a call of shots fired in the 5600 block of West Irving Park Road just before 9:40 a.m. Police found a 34-year-old man inside the business with a gunshot wound to the throat. Nothing was actually taken from the store.

Friends told CBS News Chicago that 34-year-old Mohammad Abu Hashish, a husband and father of four from Norridge, was closing up the shop late Thursday night when he was killed.

A witness told police they heard gunfire and saw a man running away from the shop. Hashish was taken to Lutheran General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

According to police radio recordings, the witness told officers he saw "a guy with a mask ran in here" and that's all they knew.

Friends said Hashish was a well-loved business owner in Portage Park who also owned a barbershop at Elston and Irving Park. Both businesses were closed Friday in light of his death.

On social media, community members said prayer services will be held at a nearby mosque for Hashish Friday, and he will be buried Saturday.

Ald. Nick Sposato (38th Ward) said his office hasn't gotten any complaints about the smoke shop and wouldn't consider it a trouble spot.

No one is currently in custody, and police have not released any information about potential suspects. An investigation by Area Five detectives is ongoing.
